In Europe and Asia, many cars offer adaptive driving beam headlights that can do this. But that still means driving much – or most – of the time using only low beam headlights that don’t reach very far. That means it will probably be years before ADB headlights are widely available in the US. But, while driving, the lights work just like standard high beam, low beam headlights. It will be years before they can offer new, redesigned ADB headlights that meet the standards, auto industry sources say.

For Mercedes, it is a devastating loss, unable to retain a generational talent and the face of its entire motorsport brand. He has been so successful with Mercedes that it’s almost hard to imagine the 39-year-old Briton racing for any other team. Hamilton holds the all-time record for F1 wins (103), achieving 82 of those with Mercedes and 21 with McLaren. It also reunites him with Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur, who Hamilton raced for at junior level. Last season, a Mercedes driver failed to win a race across a whole season for the first time since 2011.

CNN —After a bumpy start to the weekend, the Las Vegas Grand Prix eventually lived up to much of the pre-race hype. Max Verstappen was initially critical of the spectacle, but later changed his tune to don an Elvis-themed suit. F1 was returning to Las Vegas for the first time in more than 40 years, with the new street circuit featuring the city’s iconic Strip. Celebrities, including Usain Bolt, were out in force in Las Vegas. Lewis Hamilton said the race proved doubters wrong.

Sergio Perez was still in Texas when he called the Mexico City Grand Prix his most important race weekend of the season. And while Perez has been part Red Bull's crushing constructor's championship, Verstappen is so dominant that he would have Red Bull in first place all by himself. Already given one career lifeline this season, Ricciardo missed the last five races with a broken left hand. But he returns this week to the U.S. Grand Prix, where the 34-year-old Australian has a history of having some cheeky fun. Long time no see," Ricciardo said to the group of his fellow drivers when he walked into Thursday's news conference. But pace was OK. Another win, unbelievable," said Verstappen, who finished 4.8 seconds clear of Piastri. The relatively slim gap flattered the Australian, with Verstappen never looking like he was under any pressure and also setting fastest lap. Verstappen, now 209 points clear of Perez at the top of the standings, led cleanly from pole position and raced away unchallenged. After that I could just manage my pace and make sure that the tyres were always in a good window," Verstappen said. However, Red Bull Racing’s 2023 competitor, the RB19, has absolutely fried the system and blown past the boundaries of what appeared possible in this sport. Mark Thompson/Getty ImagesNewey has been designing F1 cars since 1988 and has won 12 Constructors’ Championships, split between his time at Williams, McLaren and Red Bull. Red Bull team principal Christian Horner has described Newey as “the only bloke that can see air” in an interview with Red Bull. And Mercedes eventually ceded its position at the summit of F1 to Red Bull in 2022 after being in control for much of the turbo-hybrid era. But it does raise the question: how far can Red Bull go?

Marko, 80, apologised last week after referring to Perez as a "South American" who was less focused than dominant Red Bull team mate Max Verstappen or the team's now-retired champion Sebastian Vettel. "We can confirm that Helmut Marko has received a written warning and been reminded of his responsibilities as a public figure in motor sport in line with the FIA Code of Ethics," said an FIA spokesman at the Singapore Grand Prix. Perez said on Thursday he had accepted a personal apology from Marko, whose comments continued to provoke a strong reaction in the paddock. It was not the first time Marko had referred to Perez as a South American, although the Mexican comes from Guadalajara which is geographically in North America. "I'm Italian so I know that sometimes we have been facing the same comments," said Alfa Romeo's Alessandro Alunni Bravi.

The 80-year-old Austrian later apologized for his remarks, and Pérez, speaking ahead of this weekend’s Singapore Grand Prix, said that he had also received a personal apology. “It’s completely unacceptable what he said,” Mercedes driver Hamilton, who has long spoken out against racial discrimination in Formula One, told Sky Sports when asked about Marko’s comments. “I think it just highlights firstly the work that still needs to be done. When you have a personal relationship with someone, I think it’s a feeling you’re going to have.”CNN has contacted Red Bull for comment. SINGAPORE, Sept 14 (Reuters) - Lewis Hamilton slammed Red Bull motorsport adviser Helmut Marko on Thursday for "completely unacceptable" comments blaming Mexican Formula One driver Sergio Perez's fluctuating form on his ethnicity. Perez told reporters separately at the Singapore Grand Prix that he had accepted a personal apology from the 80-year-old Austrian, an influential member of his dominant Formula One team's leadership. "I got an apology from him, a direct apology, which to me was the most important one," Perez told reporters. That to me is what matters," added the 33-year-old, who joined Red Bull in 2021 and has won two races so far this season. Perez, the winner in Singapore last year, is 145 points behind Verstappen after 14 of 22 races with Red Bull winning every round so far.

CNN —Lewis Hamilton will remain a Mercedes driver in Formula One until at least the end of the 2025 season after the team announced a contract extension on Thursday. Hamilton, who shares the record for most F1 world titles with Michael Schumacher (seven), joined Mercedes in 2013 after starting his career with McLaren in 2007. The 38-year-old owns the outright record for most race wins in F1 history with 103. In the Mercedes press release, Hamilton said, “We dream every day of being the best and we have dedicated the past decade together to achieving that goal. ZANDVOORT, Netherlands, Aug 24 (Reuters) - Alfa Romeo driver Valtteri Bottas settled for a six-pack after winning his weight in beer in a cycle race in Colorado over Formula One's August break. "The prize for the best costume was your weight in beer, and I really wanted to win the prize," said Bottas of last week's event. "I was thinking about it, obviously being mainly an American crowd, so I went for The Simpsons and Duffman." Bottas admitted his favourite character was Homer Simpson but also figured it would be tougher riding uphill dressed in that guise. He also rode a 100-mile gravel race on Sunday, finishing 20th out of 926 entrants.

Horner hits back at Mercedes duo for cost cap comments

BUDAPEST, July 21 (Reuters) - Red Bull boss Christian Horner hit back at Mercedes drivers Lewis Hamilton and George Russell on Friday for suggesting his dominant team got off lightly last year for a breach of Formula One's cost cap. "Believe me, the hit that we’ve taken with the lack of wind tunnel time that we have compared to our competitors is a massive compromise," Horner told Sky Sports television. Mercedes won an unprecedented eight constructors' titles in a row until the rules changed for 2022, with Red Bull dominant since then. "I’m just incredibly proud of the job that our team’s doing with the constraints and handicap that we have," said Horner. "To be performing at the level we have this year, to have achieved 11 straight victories...it’s been an outstanding achievement."

The company joins American rivals Ford (F.N) and General Motors (GM.N) to adopt the North American Charging Standard (NACS) as they try to expand their network of fast-chargers in an attempt to make owning EVs easier. Mercedes-Benz will be the first German automaker to sign up for Tesla's charging design for its North American customers. Mercedes-Benz will initially offer an adapter that would help its existing EVs with the Combined Charging System in North America to charge on the NACS network from 2024. It also plans to simultaneously expand its charging network with more than 400 charging hubs, including over 2,500 high-power chargers in North America by the end of the decade. Tesla, meanwhile, has expanded beyond its connectors to include CCS at some of its U.S. charging stations as the Biden administration seeks to provide billions in subsidies to expand charging networks.

SILVERSTONE, England, July 6 (Reuters) - Seven-times world champion Lewis Hamilton said he would support a peaceful protest at the British Grand Prix this weekend as Formula One drivers voiced fears of environmental activists invading the track. Asked at Silverstone whether he would support a protest that did not involve a track invasion, Hamilton, who has previously expressed sympathy with the cause, replied: "Yes. I support peaceful protests." We don't want to be put in harm's way and we don't want to put anyone else in harm's way. So if there was to be one (a protest) we hope that it's not on track."

CNN —Max Verstappen put in another dominant performance to win the Canadian Grand Prix on Sunday, bringing him level with Formula One legend Ayrton Senna’s victory total. The 25-year-old ties Senna’s career victory total, with the win also being Red Bull’s 100th team victory. Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso finished 9.5 seconds behind Verstappen in second place with Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton completing the top three. Later in the race, Verstappen avoided suffering a similar fate to that of Mercedes driver George Russell who, after colliding with the wall off of turn 8/9, was ultimately forced to retire. Mercedes drivers can soon turn to ChatGPT for voice control
  + stars: | 2023-06-15 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
Mercedes-Benz (MBGn.DE) on Thursday said U.S. drivers could power some of their luxury vehicles with ChatGPT in a test program starting June 16. Compatible with some 900,000 vehicles that have the automaker's "MBUX" systems, ChatGPT will download over the air after drivers opt in via a Mercedes app or by voice command, the company said. Mercedes said ChatGPT would make its car system's answers sound more natural and would let drivers ask for destination information or address other queries, like what to cook for dinner. The automaker had previously let drivers and passengers issue a range of requests by voice, such as turning on seat heaters. Findings from the test program will inform Mercedes' plans for adding such artificial intelligence to other countries and in other languages, the company said.

ChatGPT will help Benz's voice assistant respond to more complex commands, the firm said. Starting Friday, some 900,000 Mercedes drivers in the US will be able to opt into a beta program and add ChatGPT capability to their cars through a software update. The German automaker says ChatGPT will augment its existing "Hey Mercedes" voice assistant, allowing it to respond to a wider variety of prompts and even conduct full-on conversations. I've had positive experiences with Mercedes-Benz's software in the past, and maybe ChatGPT will make it even better and more helpful. General Motors is also working on a ChatGPT-powered voice assistant for its cars, Semafor first reported.

Verstappen wins in Spain to continue Red Bull sweep

Red Bull's Sergio Perez, Verstappen's closest rival in a season that looks sure to crown the dominant Dutch 25-year-old for a third time, finished fourth after fighting back from 11th at the start. The victory was Verstappen's fifth of the season, third in a row, third in Spain and the double world champion's 40th in Formula One. TALKING POINTThe form of the Mercedes drivers, with a re-designed car after a disappointing start to the season, provided a main talking point. Mercedes moved up to second in the championship on 152 points to runaway Red Bull's 287 and with Aston Martin dropping to third on 134. Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, who started from the pitlane after a nightmare in qualifying left him on the back row, finished 11th.

MIAMI, May 4 (Reuters) - George Russell said he has no need to clear the air with Red Bull's Max Verstappen after their Azerbaijan Grand Prix sprint clash, or do anything different in the way he races the Formula One champion. Asked by reporters ahead of the Miami Grand Prix on Thursday, the Mercedes driver said he had not discussed the incident in Baku with Verstappen. Verstappen swore at Russell after the first lap clash in the Saturday sprint ripped a hole in the side of the Red Bull. Verstappen won in Miami last year when the Hard Rock Stadium hosted a race for the first time. Mercedes are third overall, behind Aston Martin, with Russell yet to stand on the podium in 2023.

LONDON, May 2 (Reuters) - Former world champion Jenson Button expects to see Lewis Hamilton chasing a record eighth Formula One title next year despite speculation the Mercedes driver could walk away from the sport. "I don't think Lewis is going to walk away from the sport," Button told reporters on Tuesday after discussing his preparations for the 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race with a special NASCAR entry. He's in a car that's not as good as what he's used to, I get that. "It probably won't be this year but in 2024, I think we'll see Lewis Hamilton on the grid. I think he's still hungry to win another world championship."
